How where you introduced into refereeing?
I was introduced to refereeing by a friend who I used to play football with. Being part of a big youth football club allowed us both to referee younger age groups after we played on a Sunday morning.
What has been the highlight of your career so far and why?
One of the highlights of my career has been running the line on a friendly game at St.James’ Park in May 2008. Despite it only being a friendly between two local law firms, it was a great experience to officiate on a game at a premier league ground, something that many people will not get the chance to do, and certainly something I wouldn’t have done if I hadn’t started refereeing.
What is the biggest game you have officiated and why?
Being appointed as assistant referee to the Under 18’s County Cup final in 2008. Getting the appointment of county cup final is always a privilege and it was an experience I really enjoyed.
What are your aims and ambitions as a referee?
In the short-term I hope to get promoted to level 4 in the summer and enjoy my first season at supply level. Longer-term I’d like to think that I could show the determination, dedication and quality needed to achieve football league status.
What/Who has been the biggest influence on your career and why?
I would say my parents who have been encouraging throughout my career so far; in the early days they would take me to every game and always offered their full support. Some of the tips and guidance I have received from various people at the RA has always been imperative to my development as a referee.
In your opinion who is / was the best referee?
At the minute I think Howard Webb is the best English referee, he has really led the way and set great examples for younger referees hoping to get to the far reaches of the game. Across the continent I don’t think that you can look further than Pierlugi Collina. For years he was the top European referee, and refereeing the final of both the UEFA cup and Champions League, and ultimately the world cup final in 2002 rewarded his dedication and quality.
